Travel Tips - Common Scams
Some people prey on the fact that tourists are relaxing
and have their guard down. Be on the lookout for:
- People offering to change your money at a “good
rate” in the street – the rate will be
good but you may receive a bundle of notes with several
missing
- Taxi drivers with meters that “don’t
work”. Negotiate meter use and/or fare to your
satisfaction before the journey starts
- Beggars attempting to distract you whilst their
companion picks your pockets
- Friendly locals offering to be your guide, assist
at large train / bus stations, interpret etc –
they may demand payment rather aggressively
- Street vendors offering “good value”
brand name clothing and jewellery etc. It’s
likely to be fake and cheap
